Agra




It is also the former capital of Hindustan sited in the Northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The overall population of this city is about 1,686,976. This populous city is renowned for its historical significance and today, it has become one of the most popular destinations for the Indian tourists. It is important for you to note that this city is mentioned in the Mahabharata and it was called by the name Agrevana. Many legends believe that this city was founded by Raja Badal Singh, a Rajput king.

History

It is a fact that the history of Agra city is recognized well with the Mughal Empire. However, this city was established much before and its historical linkages are associated with the Mahabharata period. According to historical beliefs, Sultan Sikandar Lodi founded the Agra city in 1504. He was the ruler of Delhi Sultanate and after his death, his son Ibrahim Lodi ruled the city.

In 1556, Hemu Vikramaditya, a great Hindu warrior, won the Agra city and he was throned as the Prime Minister of this city. After some time, Hemu Vikramaditya went to conquer Delhi and he soon established the Hindu Kingdom. Many people believe that the Agra city witnessed the golden age during the Mughal Empire. Agra was known as Akbarabad by the Mughals and it soon turned out to be the capital city of the Mughal Empire. In 1649, the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan shifted his capital city from Agra to Shahjahanabad.

Climate

There are some major bus stands located within the Agra city like Ford Depot, Taj Depot, Idgah Bus Stand and inter State Bus Terminal. These busses stand offer roadways services, which connect the Agra city to some of the major cities of North India.

Some Major Tourist Attractions

Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is actually the mausoleum of Shah Jahan’s wife Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal is also one of the 3 World Heritage sites in Agra. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and it got completed in 1653. This building is completely made up of white marble stones and it was built as a final resting place for Mumtaz Mahal. It took about 22 years to construct this symmetrical monument. Taj Mahal also consists of a landscaped garden in its midsection. This building can easily be observed from the Agra Fort and people believe that Shah Jahan gazed it for almost eight years from the Agra Fort.

Agra Fort

Agra Fort is also a popular tourist attraction in Agra and it was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565. This historical fort is completely built up of red sandstone and there are many notable building present inside the fort like Moti Masjid, Diwan-e-Am, Diwan-e-Khas, Shish Mahal and Khas Mahal.

Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is also a popular attraction for the tourists of the Agra city. This historical monument was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar and it is located about 35 kilometers away from the center of the Agra city. Fatehpur Sikri is also a World heritage Site.

Sikandra, Akbar’s Tomb

Sikandra is the resting place of one of the powerful Mughal rulers Akbar and it is mainly located on the Delhi Agra highway. This tomb is located only 13 kilometers away from the Agra Fort and this tomb mainly reflects the complete personality of Akbar the Great. You can see about 99 names of Allah that are being inscribed on the tomb.
