Teen Murti Bhavan, New Delhi




Teen Murti Bhavan, which is also popular by the name Nehru House was the home of Jawahar Lal Nehru, India’s first prime minister. It is located in Chanakyapuri in New Delhi, India. The complex is named after the Teen Murti that is, 3 statues, Memorial made by Leonard Jennings, the British sculptor. These statues are located on the front side of its large grounds. The memorial includes statues of 3 soldiers which were built in the remembrance of the brave soldiers of India in 1922.

This building is the perfect example of British architecture which was crafted in 1930 by Robert Tor Russel in division of the capital of India, New Delhi as the home of the chief of the British Indian Army. In 1964, after the death of Jawahar Lal Nehru, the residence was transformed into a museum-cum-library which is now known as Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML).

History of Teen Murti Bhavan

Initially, the house was the residence of the Commander of British Indian Forces and was known as 'Flagstaff House'. This building is created from stucco and stone which faces towards the “Rashtrapati Bhavan”. The Nehru Memorial Library located inside this complex is one of the best sources of information about Indian history. It was established in 1966 and operated from the main building itself. But in 1974, another building was inaugurated for NMML within the complex grounds. Nehru Planetarium located here is one of the four planetariums in India. On February 6, 1984, it was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister at that time.

Attraction inside Teen Murti Bhavan

Nehru Memorial Museum & Library and Nehru planetarium are the major attraction inside Teen Murti Bhavan complex. NMML is one of the largest libraries in the capital city and is also an academic centre in Delhi. Nehru’s diary entries, personal letters and some books provided to him by political leaders are kept in the library which has almost eighteen thousand unusual microfilm rolls, more than ten thousand manuscripts and about one lakh photographs.

Nehru Planetarium offers an amazing opportunity to find out the solar system (Hindi and English) in its sky-theatre with dome-shaped display screen which is created from glass fibre and has the sitting capacity of 270 people. Numerous events related to astronomy such as astronomy lectures, quiz contests, telescope creation trainings etc. These events occur throughout the year. It is the perfect place for people who have interest to know about the universe in details. Huge and well-maintained lawns with shady trees and lots of peacocks around attract the Kids.

How to Reach

By Air

In Delhi, Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is well connected to major parts of the country via flights. Teen Murti Bhavan is located at a distance of 10 Kms from IGI Airport. One can hire cab or taxi from airport to reach the Bhavan.

By Road/Rail

The two railway stations (Nizamuddin and New Delhi) are well connected to other major cities through rail network. ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminal) in Kashmiri Gate offers good bus services to other cities at reasonable prices. The nearest metro to Teen Murti Bhavan is Race Course which is on yellow line.
