Cathedral Church Of The Redemption

Also known as the Viceroy Church, the Cathedral Church of the Redemption is said to be one of the most picturesque and grand church when compared to other churches in India. It is located in New Delhi, in east of Rashtrapati Bhavan ( the Parliament House) which was also used by British Viceroys. You can see pictures of the church in the shape of a very beautiful cake for birthday with a candle perched on top of the cake. This project/church is a part of the Church of North India of Delhi diocese.

It was made in the early 1900 when the chaplain was appointed, who was Rev. T R Dixon for the purpose of spiritual needs of the British Officers staying in New Delhi. It took a time of 8 years for its construction to get complete and was ready to be unveiled in 1935. Its first day for the public to come and worship was on 18th January 1931 which was a Sunday.

Away from the noise and loud environment of busy New Delhi, it stands pretty in one of the quietest lanes of north Jaipur column and is on the west direction of the North Avenue’s Parliament House.

The most important events for Christians are Christmas and Easter Day which they celebrate and spend with their loved ones with great fervor. Early morning people throng the church for early morning masses specially organized to mark the start of these two main festivals.

They also organise a yearly fete to raise funds for the underprivileged and also to support the education of leprosy students. It is held around the month of February every year which sees mass participation by many devotees.
