Rishikesh




In pure Sanskrit terminology, the city is known as the lord of the senses because Lord Vishnu appeared before the Rishi who did Tapasya for many years. There are other mythological stories which trace the creation of Rishikesh. In the Hindu epic Skanda Puran, Lord Vishnu appeared under the mango tree and the city got its name from there. Legends of the past suggest that Lord Shiva cursed Agni and he had to do penance for the sins. The city derives its name from the settlements that have come up on the other side of the Ganges River which runs alongside it. Laksman Jhula is one of the most important attractions that have attracted the attention of the tourists from India or abroad. As a part of the settlements, the Sivananda Nagar has come up and houses the famous ashram. In addition to the aforesaid places, the Swarg Ashram is situated in the eastern part of the river banks. Ganga Aarti is very popular at the Triveni ghat and is attended by a large number of users. After driving 28 Km from Rishikesh, one can easily visit the Neelkanth Mahadeva temple. One can also visit the Vashishtha Guha cave which is at a distance of about 21 km from the Ganges.

History

Rishikesh is considered to be a part of Garhwal which is also called Kedarkhand. According to the legend, Lord Rama had to do penance for killing the demon king Ravana and Lakshman tried to assuage him from the path. To accomplish the task, the young brother used the jute rope to cross the river Ganga. It is one of the tourist attractions however the bridge faced wear and tear over a period of time. To make it sturdier, the iron suspension bridge was constructed in 1889, but it was destroyed in the floods that occurred in 1924. One can also read the Skanda Purana for the evidences of the Indra kund in this area. Ganges is considered to be the sacred river of the Hindus and it flows from the Shivalik mountain ranges in the Himalayas. As a mark of devotion, different types of temples are created in the area. The government has implemented the law of vegetarianism in the region. The city is full of ashrams and lots of different temples that captivate the imagination of the users. Haridwar which is also a sacred city is located in the southern direction of the city.
