About Shantivan

On the banks of River Yamuna, the memorial of Jawaharlal Nehru is located.

The first Prime Minister of country has his memorial built in Shantivan and he always worked on the trail of developing the country. He served the country as Prime Minister for the longest period of time. The memorial in Shantivan has a gravestone that stands vertically.

The memorials of other great leaders of India that are located near to Shantivan are Raj Ghat, Vijay Ghat, Shakti Sthal and Vir Bhumi. There is no fee charge to visit the memorial.

Location

The memorial is located as one travels through southern east direction of Red Fort from Raj Ghat to the banks of River Yamuna.

History

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of the country and he was born on 14th November, that day is also marked as Children’s Day. A memorial was created at this place after he died in 1964. The surroundings of the memorial are adorned with green trees and different colored flowers are also grown all over the garden that surrounds the memorial. The green and lush garden is very inviting for the visitors. The surroundings of the memorial are very peaceful and serene and hence the name Shantivan is given to this memorial.

How to Reach

To visit the monument the visitors can travel through the local buses that ply from almost every part of the city of Delhi. The taxi or auto-rickshaw can also be hired to visit the memorial. The closest railway station is Old Delhi Railway station while the nearest metro rail station is the Kashmiri Gate station. The closest international airport is the Indira Gandhi International airport.

Visit to Raj Ghat Delhi

Mahatma Gandhi who is the father of the Nation had his last rituals performed at Raj Ghat. The memorial is located close to Shantivan. The memorial is surrounded by green lush garden. The memorial has a raised platform that has been made using the black colored marble. The place is visited by political leaders, known local and foreign dignitaries to pay their reverences to Mahatma Gandhi on eve of his birth and death anniversary.

14th November is marked as the Children’s Day and is also the birthday of Pandit Nehru. The birthday and death anniversary of Nehru Ji are marked with the cultural programme.
