Vegetation In Delhi

The vegetation of Delhi mainly comprises of plants that vary in different sizes depending on the topographical conditions of the place. The vegetation of Delhi is never crowded in one single place and it never offers shade for one particular area as it is strewn across all the places widely.

A basic knowledge about the topographical conditions of Delhi becomes imperative to understand the different types of vegetation. The main kinds of topography that exist in Delhi are the Yamuna Food Plains, The Delhi Ridge and The Plains. The vegetation in each of this condition is quite distinct and unique. Rich and rare varieties of cactus plants and acacia grow on the ridge during the dry seasons. However, when it rains during monsoons, there are lots of herbaceous plants that one can see along the ridge. The Plains of Delhi have an abundance of Shisham trees on it whereas the Yamuna Food Plains have a lot of vegetation that resembles the riverine type.

Trees and herbs at reasonable heights characterize vegetation in Delhi. There are also lots of plants that have brilliantly coloured flowers on them. The river banks of Yamuna see huge growth of grass and weeds.

Types of Vegetation

The arid and semi-arid areas of Delhi see lots of growth of thorny scrubs. The Ridge Forest is also classified as the Tropical Thorn Forest according to the nomenclature followed by Champion and Seth of 1968.

Overall, the vegetation of Delhi belongs to the category, “Northern Tropical Thorn Forest Type” and the most common trees that are found here are Nilotica, Leucophlea, catechu, modesta, butea monosperma, commonly known as dhak, salvadora persica, cassia fistula etc.
