Popular Punjabi festival Lohri marks completion of winter months and involves lot of dances, singing and merriment. The next day is celebrated as Makar Sankranthi by Hindus. The spring festival Basant Panchami is celebrated in January or February month when the gardens of city are full of blossomed flowers. The Mughal garden at Rashtrapathi Bhawan is opened for public during this time. Special prayers are offered during the festivals of Mahavir Jayanthi and Budha Purnima by devotees.

Music and Dance of Delhi

Delhi is a centre of dance and music since ancient time. The city has abundant wealth of classical dance and music which it has imbibed from the Mughal period. The music has numerous forms like Ghazals, carnatic, Hindustani and lighter music. Music experts and music lovers can choose from the varieties of music forms available in the city. There are many people in the city with adequate knowledge of raga, music notes, talas, rhythmical notes of classical music. One of the popular versions of the Indian classical music is the carnatic music which is extremely melodious and soothing to hear. The compositions of this music are written and vocally sung. Even while they are played on stringed instrument they are played in singing style called gayaki. Delhi has several auditorium and halls which hosts live performances and concerts. Apart from the classical music, folk music are also practiced by tribal populations like Mundas, Gondas and Gujjars.
