Taxis

The usage of Taxis cannot be undermined with the advent of Metro Service. There are still many areas in Delhi which do not have Metro connectivity, these areas have to be reached in a Taxi. But Metros services are very comfortable and much cheaper.

The Taxi service in Delhi has a fleet of old Ambassadors or Omnis with unique black-and-yellow livery and a green stripe that run on CNG. However, Chevrolet Tavera or Toyota Innova is a popular choice when the complete family wants to commute in Delhi. All these vehicles are provided with fare meters However; it is not very reliable as it gets tampered very easily. Hence, it is advisable to fix the fare well in advance before commencing the journey.  Some of the fare details are listed below:

  • The usual fare is Rs 15 for the first 1 km and Rs 8.50 per km thereafter.
  • The taxi fare for trips to almost every part of the city falls between Rs 200-500.
  • The fare to the airport is usually higher and is dependent on the boarding point.
  • The booking of taxi for eight hour duration would cost Rs 1,500.

The driver expects a tip for services provided. Apart from the distance, the size of the vehicle also determines the fare. The taxi services provided by black and yellow taxis are not air-conditioned. For taxis that are provided with air condition the charges are usually little higher.

The services of the Ambassador car were short lived with the introduction of Radio Taxi services in Dec 2006. The fares for Radio Taxi services were as high as Rs 20/km. In spite of this, customer started preferring these services over the traditional Ambassador services due to its modern facilities like GPS, air condition, luxury seats and 24X7 availability. The minimum fare is Rs 20 and the fare gets incremented by Rs 20/- with every passing kilometre. The requirement of SUVs should be placed in advance so that the company can cater for the same. The good news is that the fare remains same for SUVs also. However, night charges are 1/4th more than the day fare and are applicable between 11pm to 5am. Many corporate offices make use of these services for commuting their employees. The drivers do not expect any tips. The booking is usually confirmed with an SMS providing information of the vehicle and driver. Also, the driver gives a call to inform his arrival at the pickup point. The drivers are usually comfortable with English, however, it is advisable to speak short words slowly so that the drivers can easily interpret.
