Road Transport

Transportation in Delhi is highly dependent on railways, roads as well as the rapid systems of transit such as Delhi Metro. In Delhi, the roads are under the maintenance of Municipal Corporation of Delhi or MCD, Delhi Cantonment Board or DCB, New Delhi Municipal Council or NMDC and Public Works Department or PWD and DDA or Delhi Development Authority. Delhi is supposedly having one of the finest road layouts in the country with huge road densities of 1749 kms in length in about 100 sqkm. Important large roads in Delhi are Outer Ring Road and Ring Road, where there were about 110,000 vehicles in a day as per the records of 2001. The road extending across Delhi was 28,508 kms with 388 kms being National Highways. Public transportation in Delhi through road communication has been provided through taxis, auto-rickshaws and DTC buses and to some extent by cycle rickshaws.

Delhi people usually rely on road transportation methods, with 1% only being contributed by trains. The existing network of ring rail in Delhi is not much utilised. Almost 60% share of the total road transport is taken up by buses, while personal vehicles only make up 30% of the road transportation. Although in terms of number of vehicles plying on the road, buses are only 1.2%, but the load of traffic is almost around 60%. Personal vehicles, bikes and other two wheelers account for 64.5% of the total vehicles on the move in Delhi, cars and other four wheelers are to the extent of 26.6% of the total.

Having a successful system of transportation in Delhi is largely dependent on the roads in Delhi. It is necessary to maintain these roads for ensuring good transportation and this is being done by many bodies in Delhi like Delhi Cantonment Board or DCB, Municipal Corporation of Delhi or MCD, Public Works Department or PWD, New Delhi Municipal Committee or NDMC and Delhi Development Authority or DDA. In Delhi, the road network is quite large, which is supposed to be highest in India, with stretch of 1749 kms of road across 100 sq km area.

It is because of the road network in Delhi, which is having good planning that it helps in connecting Delhi with many other parts of the country.

There are plenty of roadways in Delhi, which comes under major connecting road category, such as Outer Ring Road, Ring Road, Lodhi Road, Connaught Place, Greater Kailash, Vasant Kunj, Karol Bagh, Janakpuri, Janpath, Vasant Vihar and many other areas. Some important national highways of the country are also coming out from Delhi to connect many other cities like NH1, NH2, NH8 and also NH10. Inside the limits of Delhi, the laid down road goes to the length of above 28,508 kms, where there are more than 388 kms of road of National Highways of Delhi.
