About Safdarjung Airport

Safdarjung Airport is located in the Safdarjung Colony of national Capital, New Delhi in India. It was established during the British rule by the name “Willingdon Airfield”. Airport operations at Safdarjung commenced in the year 1929. It was the first airport of Delhi and second in the country. This airport being part of South Atlantic air ferry route found extensive use during the World War II. It was also used during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 for ferry operations. It was initially located on the edge of Delhi designed by Lutyens. However, now it is located on the centre of New Delhi city. Safdarjung was the main airport of Delhi until 1962. However, with the induction of modern jet aircrafts the air operations were shifted to Palam due to space constraints.
