Delhi Sarai Rohilla railway station (otherwise referred as Sarai Rohilla) is located at a distance of approximately 4 km from the well known Old Delhi railway junction. The station code of Sarai Rohilla is DEE. It is under the control of Northern Railway zone. Most of the trains coming from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana halt at this junction. This station acts as starting destination for many trains including AC trains and Duronto express.

The term Sarai refers to a resting place or roadside inn for commuters. The station got its name as it was located on a medieval village. The village in turn got this name from a sarai, Rahullah Khan who was a noble in Mughal court. Long time ago, this was a sarai located on the busy route towards Delhi and also a pilgrimage town for Ajmer. Ajmer was one among the three lads of Khalil Ullah Khan who served as the Governor in Delhi during the period of Shahjahan, the Mughal Emperor. He was also a relative of Empress Mumtaz. Over a period of time, the place acquired the name of Rohilla following the rule of Rohillas in Rohilkhand (situated around Bareilly) and also Rampur (situated northeast of Delhi) during Mughal era.

Origin

This station was developed to be a terminus for many trains starting from Delhi towards Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. This station consists of 5 platforms, 3 washing lines to clean train rakes and one ticket reservation counter. The Vivekanandpuri railway halt located next to this station is also linked to Sarai Rohilla through a foot over bridge.

Hazrat Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar are the other two terminuses from where trains originate in Delhi.
