In operation since World War 2, it is also called Willingdon Airfield which commenced its operations in 1929 at the time of British rule. This airport once served as the main airport of New Delhi till 1962. This airport is presently known as Safdarjung Airport while was officially closed in 2002.

In 2001, following 9/11 and the immense success of large and much comfortable IGIA, the ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi decided to shut down Safdarjung airport for public use because it was thought to be used as a secured emergency gateway for the Prime Minister and President. Apart from this, the airport is also used for myriad of activities which includes the VVIP helicopter’s transits of the state chief ministers, dignitaries and the cabinet members. Even the maintenance of aircrafts is carried here. This airport also served as the Park and ride facility when the common wealth games were held in India during 2010.

In the popular comic book series of Tin Tin in Tibet, the characters Captain Haddok, Tintin and Snowy have their halt in India while depart from the Willingdon Air field.
