History

Till 1962, the major airport in the capital city was Safdarjung Airport which was constructed during 1930. Because of the increase in passenger traffic, the civil transport was shifted in 1962 to Palam (renamed as IGIA). During II World War, British people constructed Palam Airport by the name of RAF Station Palam and later on assigned as Air Force Station for Indian Air Force.

This Airport consumed a population of 1,300 passengers for every hour. To manage this traffic, supplementary terminal with four times the space of Palam Airport was developed during 1970s. On May 2, 1986 this new Terminal 2 (International terminal) was inaugurated in the name of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
