The Metro Museum that has been opened in New Delhi is the first modern museum in South Asia that showcases the Delhi Metro. It is the world’s only installation in a functional Metro station.

The Metro Museum at Patel Chowk Metro station showcases the origin, history and the journey of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). It is a wonderful New Year’s gift to the people of Delhi. Delhi Metro is the first modern transportation system in India and has provided a reliable, fast, comfortable and safe mode of transport in Delhi. This has transformed the travel system of the city.

DMRC was founded in 1995 but it started operating commercially on 25th December 2002. It has a diverse and rich history as this project is the largest intrusion in urban transportation since the independence of India. Latest technology was used to build the Delhi Metro in one of the most congested cities in the world. This technology came from across the world from places including Japan, Korea, France, Germany and many more, thus creating one of the most advanced systems in the world. A major part of the construction was funded by Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). Delhi Metro started making operational profits from the very first day.

Delhi Metro Museum is one of a kind museum set up at an operational metro station over a period of just two months. Such museums are found only in a few cities of Europe, Japan and US.

A collection of historical photographs, display panels, exhibits and traces of the origin of Delhi Metro is displayed. It took 32 years for Delhi Metro to reach the stage of operation. Everything that represents this journey, from the drawing boards to important milestones is put up on display here. The selection of technology like rolling stock, rail gauge and others are also displayed here.

The projects were completed efficiently and consistently by DMRC, thanks to the unique style of management and the work culture of DMRC which is displayed here. Stress is laid on spiritualism that serves as a guiding principle. The ‘Bhagavad Gita’ is an inspiration for the Metro employees.

There is a section dedicated to the construction of Delhi Metro and the problems faced during the process. This section includes the stories of construction of marvels of technology like the Chawri Bazaar Metro Station, the world’s second deepest metro station and the first extra-dosed bridge in India. Model TBM oo Tunnel Boring Machine, soil samples from different parts of the city, a ‘tooth’ from TBM and differently coloured helmets used at sites of construction are all part of this museum.

The museum also has the technological features used in the Delhi Metro described. These include Automatic fare collection system, Automatic Train Control System, 24-hour activities of different departments, real metro rails, Over Head Equipment to supply power and special disabled friendly features. Around 1.2 million people waited in queues at six metro stations on the first day of operation. As a result, DMRC was forced to request people to opt for different joyrides.

There are two touch screen computers at the Museum. DMRC corporate movie and animations are played here. They describe how the tunnel boring machines and launching girders were use in the elevated construction. Mannequins display different uniforms that were worn by construction and operations staff. Short descriptions of these uniforms, a model of the metro train, models of stations, close circuit television cameras and share certificates are also on display.
