Max Mueller Bhavan was named after Max Muller who lived from 1823 to 1900. He was a scholar of Sanskrit and co-founded modern Indian studies. The official name of these institutions is the Goethe-Institut. It is responsible for organizing a variety of cultural events in Delhi and other parts of northern India. These are conducted with an objective of promoting the German culture and its contemporary aspects. The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institution of the Federal Republic of Germany having presence all over the world. An important activity of this institute is to present a comprehensive perspective of Germany by sharing information about the culture, society and political life in that country. The aim is to foster exchange of knowledge and culture between the two countries. In India, there are six of these institutes located in Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune and Delhi. The one in Delhi is located at 3, Kasturba Gandhi Marg.

The Max Muller Bhavan is well known for its courses in German language and the examinations for certification in proficiency are conducted at international level. Besides language courses for people of all ages, certain specialized courses for specific companies are also conducted. The examination is of global standards. Anyone who is interested in learning about Germany, its language and culture may do so by contacting the course office in this structure.  This institute is also known to train teachers by conducting workshops to teach German as a foreign language.
