The Government of India set up the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund after the demise of the leader in the year 1964. The main aim of the fund was to promote education in the field of astronomy and construction of Nehru Planetarium. The planetarium was inaugurated by his daughter and former Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi on 6th February 1984. There is also a Planetarium by similar name in Mumbai. The space suit and mission journal used by him is also available here.

Nehru Planetarium hosts a “Sky Theatre show” which is very popular and attracts more than 2 Lakh visitors every year. The planetarium underwent a major renovation in the year 2010 with a budget of Rs. 11 crore.
