Rabindra Bhavan




Rabindra Bhavan is located on 35, Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi. It is one of the prominent landmarks in the central area of Connaught place in New Delhi. This building constructed in 1960s is maintained by the government. This building is a popular place for promotion of arts and cultural events. There have been many dramas, music concerts, art exhibitions and dance festivals held here. A number of such events are organized for the general public as well. Rabindra Bhavan comprises of a distinct gallery where exhibitions are held. As it is in a central location, it is easily accessible from all parts of the city. The various forms of transport which can be used to reach here include the city’s bus service, the Delhi metro, commercial cabs and private transport.

Rabindra Bhavan houses the offices of prominent cultural organizations such as the Lalit Kala Akademi, Sahitya Akademi and the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The Lalit Kala Akademi Art Gallery is known as one of the finest examples of Indian modernism. This building also serves as a memorial museum for studies on Tagore. It is also the hub for research studies on Rabindranath Tagore. The wide range of artifacts and personal items of Shri Rabindranath Tagore attract a large number of visitors. These include old photographs which show his lifestyle. His voice records are also part of the collection. The Bhavan also houses a library which has a general section comprising of a fantastic collection of letters composed by celebrities, manuscripts and paintings.

There is a need to cherish and develop India’s precious heritage of music, dance and drama. The archive of the academies comprise of audio-visual tapes and films which are considered as the largest collection of this kind in the country. This collection is referred to by many research scholars. The reference library also consists of books in English, Hindi and some regional languages. There are more than 250 musical instruments on display here. The works of maestros in music, dance and theater are available on audio and video files.

The Rabindra Bhavan is funded by the government and is known as a cultural center comprising of a gallery for holding exhibitions and includes an administrative building where the three academies of art and culture have their offices. This administrative building is a Y-shaped building with four storey wings. This building is connected to the gallery via an open walkway. A popular feature of this Bhavan is the open air theater called Meghdoot, which has been witness to a large number of cultural programmes. Recently, the three academies have joined hands to develop bookshops and a cafe at the Bhavan.
