Lajpat Nagar

An affluent suburb to the south of New Delhi, Lajpat Nagar is named after the great patriotic leader Lala Lajpat Rai, who is popularly known as the 'Lion of Punjab' throughout the world. Though initially this area was known by the name Cheap cantonment and Cheap colony, the then prevalent aristocrats later named it as Lajpat Nagar, in memory of the leader of the same name. Well known for its centralized market, this area was developed in the 1950's after the 1947 partition of India. Though this place was initially home to the Hindu and Sikh immigrants from Pakistan, it now accommodates many foreigners and Indian nationals.

This colony occupies a special place in Indian history, as it was used by refugees to set up their camps. Later, it became the second home to the Punjabi community, as many people migrated to the land, in order to seek better opportunities.
