DUSIB

The Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi passed the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board Act, 2010 on 1st April, 2010. The Lt. Governor of Delhi passed the order to the effect on 1st July, 2010. It was under this Act that the DUSIB (Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board) was formed.

The Slum and JJ Department, which looked into the affairs of slums and JJs, is now with the DUSIB. It was earlier a part of the MCD. This department was formed as a part of MCD and not as a part of any decree and it was formed as early as 1962. The Slum and JJ Department had to look after the duties entrusted to the Slum Areas (Improvement & Clearance) Act, 1956. It was in 1967 that the department was merged with DDA. However, the department did see to and forth the transfers but finally in 1980, the department was a part of MCD since 1992.

Aims and Objectives

The basic objective of DUSIB is to improve the life conditions of the residents of slum and JJ areas. The population of slum dwellers currently is approximately around 1.40 crores. It is estimated that around 30 lakh people in around 6 lakh slums live under sub-standard conditions with not even basic amenities. The lack of basic civic services and the poor living conditions of these areas has been a major concern to the government. All the figures mentioned above are based on rough estimation because there are no official data available since no survey has been conducted on these areas so far.

Mission/Vision

The primary duty of DUSIB is to better the conditions of the Slum areas and improving the life conditions of the residents and for which the Board has to implement plans and schemes approved by the Government of Delhi.

The Slum and JJ Department, a part of MCD, is now a part of DUSIB and functions under the Government of Delhi. The Chief Minister of Delhi is the Chairperson.
