PIL Filed Against NDMC for Changing the Name of Road from Aurangzeb to A P J Abdul Kalam Road

Sep 4, 2015 | P. Shenoy

In an emergency mode of action, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) renamed the Aurangzeb Road amidst the city to A P J Abdul Kalam road. The change was reflected after a full and final decision of the NDMC which voted unanimously in favour of the proposal.

Changes made pursuant to proposals

There were apparently three separate proposals to rename the colonial-era road named after Aurangzeb- the Mughal emperor. The decision to honour the Late President will be out on morning of Friday and the entire stretch will see changed boards by 6 a.m.

Challenge through PIL lying with Delhi High Court

Notwithstanding the challenge by way of PIL filed in Delhi High Court, the NDMC officials were seen working on changing the name boards. The matter is likely to come up before the Court shortly.

Virtual world is faster than real world

The decision was taken by the corporation on 28th August and immediately the virtual world made necessary changes. In a way the virtual world was faster as compared to the NDMC. Thereby the passers-by on the said road were confused since the road signs read the message as “Aurangzeb road” while their Google Maps showed the same as “A P J Abdul Kalam Road”.
