Delhi University Polls - Stage Set For Three Way Fight

Delhi University will be holding the annual student body elections today. This annual program is always wrought with great excitement especially for the new entrants to University life.

For more than ten years now, the student wings of the two major political parties; National Students' Union of India (NSUI) affiliated to Congress(I) and Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated to BJP have been the main contestants. However, this year the student wing Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) of AAP, the party in power in Delhi has also fielded its candidate and hence the contest has become triangular.

There are 42 colleges in the two campuses of Delhi University and a total of 135298 students. They are the eligible voters who for the coveted posts of the DUSU or Delhi University Student’s Union. There are 50 candidates who are fighting the elections for various posts out of which 35 candidates are in fray for the four most important posts of President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint Secretary.

According to the information given by the Returning Officer (DUSU elections), Mr. D. S. Rawat, there are nine candidates in fray for the post of the President of DUSU and eight for that of the Vice President. The candidates for the post of Secretary are 10 and for the post of Joint Secretary there are eight students contesting.

All the 42 colleges of the University are geared up for this big event with 127 election booths and 700 Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). The timing for voting for morning college students is between 8.30 AM and 12.30 PM and the evening college students can vote between 3 PM and 7 PM. Security arrangements are also in place to ensure a peaceful election process. The results of this year’s DUSU elections will be declared by afternoon of 12th September 2015.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will also hold its Students’ Union (JNUSU) Elections with 22 candidates for the four Central panel posts and 83 candidates for the councillors’ posts at different centres, informed the CEC for JNUSU elections, Praveen Thallapelli.
