Public Transport in Delhi hit badly as the City Shivers in cold

December 23, 2014 | V. Velayudam

On December 22nd 2014, the temperature in the national capital of Delhi touched 4.2degrees Celsius, which was the lowest in the season so far, but also the lowest in Delhi for the last five years. The city was covered with a thick blanket of fog till noon. Due to this dense fog, visibility on the roads and air was very poor leading to cancellation of many flights and trains.

The thick layer of flog slowly started getting clear and by 9.00AM the fog had cleared up to 150m. The meteorological department confirmed that the city’s temperature on that day was around 4 degrees below normal. Till the 22nd, the average temperature during the winter season in Delhi for 2014 was just about 6.4degrees Celsius.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport reported several incidents of delayed and cancelled flights. Similarly lots of trains coming to and leaving from Delhi were also either delayed by long hours or cancelled. At least 70 trains including Rajdhani Express and Purushottam Express were severely affected due to the dense fog. Road traffic too moved at a snail’s pace due to this unusually thick layer of fog. However, the meteorological department confirmed that the fog would clear off by afternoon and that the intensity of the cold would come down phenomenally in the next few days.
