Modi to Welcome Obama in Fortress Delhi

January 23, 2015 | Vidhya

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has pulled off a coup by inviting the US President Barack Obama for the Republic Day celebrations in the country on the 26th of January 2015. Security measures are on in full swing in the country due to this impending visit by Obama who is reportedly the most powerful leader in the world today.

A military parade and display of all Indian weapons are some of the major events that will the Republic Day celebrations on Monday. These celebrations will be attended by Modi, Obama and various political heavyweights from both India and the US. There will be a no-fly zone for a range of 400km during this day as part of security arrangements. Traditionally this limit used to be just 300km, but Obama being quite powerful, has demanded an extension in this to a limit of 400km.

Agra, Jaipur and areas in the disputed areas at the borders are cordoned off as part of security measures. Operations of commercial flights will be suspended at least for 2 hours or the time till the Republic Day celebrations are over. The security arrangements are kept as a top-notch secret; quite understandably so. Security personnel are not willing to divulge any information related to precautionary safety measures that are being taken by them to prevent all kinds of incidents that are likely to happen when the US President is in India.

Since this visit is happening barely a month after the deadly massacre in Pakistan , where hundreds of innocent children were killed, the Prime Minister’s office is working overtime to ensure that the US President’s visit is a grand success. India’s home ministry is confident about the security measures that it has undertaken, but it is leaving no stone unturned in this department. All the metro stations in Delhi are now filled with police and patrol officers who check all the people who enter or leave from the station.

The US President and the First Lady are expected to arrive in New Delhi and will travel around the country in his limousine, nicknamed “The Beast” for its sheer size and number of armours inside. The First Couple will also visit the Taj Mahal in Agra. A team of 40 US security personnel is already in Agra, inspecting the security arrangements in Agra. The team is seen at the backdrop of this monument, patrolling along the banks of River Yamuna, investigating security measures here, ahead of their leader’s visit.
