Chandigarh




The name of the city is derived from the temple of Chandi which is located near the city. It is one of the youngest cities of India and was created in 1947 after independence. Le Corbusier was the chief architect for designing the city which has captivated the imagination of the people. According to the latest economic census, it is one of the places with the highest per capita income. Apart from the accumulated wealth, it is also known for its amazing roads and cleanliness. The human development index has given it the top rankings among the different cities spread across India.

History

The impact of partition of India in Punjab was huge because Lahore became a part of the Pakistan and it created many problems in the end. Punjab needed a capital city which forced the government to create a new city called Chandigarh. The French planner was called in to create a new and planned city that would attract the attention of the visitors. The, then Prime minister of India took personal interest in the construction because the city was an epitome of modernity. Open hand monument was designed which is a symbol of peace, assimilating the ideas from the world over. In 1966, the state of Haryana was carved out of Punjab because it represented people who spoke Hindi as compared to the one whose mother tongue was Punjabi. The city was located at the border of the two states, so it was converted into Union territory thereby serving both the states. The state legislatures of the governments are located in the city.

Climate

The city is situated near the Shivalik ranges of the Himalayas and experiences subtropical weather. Variation between the temperatures is huge because in summers, it might rise to about 42 degree centigrade and in winter dips to below freezing point. Rainfall is prevalent during winter season as well due to the air blowing across the Mediterranean Sea. In the spring season, the temperature hovers around 25 degree centigrade and drops to around 9 as the minimum temperature.

Best Time to Visit

People should visit Chandigarh between the months of August and November. The climate is pleasant and attracts large number of tourists from all over the world. It is also called the city of Gardens because of the graceful ambience which percolates in the environment.  In August, the monsoons are over and the temperature registers a significant drop.

How to Reach Chandigarh

The city is well connected to different parts of the country. National Highway 21 provides amazing services from Delhi via Ambala. People can visit different places of pilgrimage around the city and soak in the excitement in an impeccable manner.
Not only by road, but people can travel by train as well. Shatabdi express daily carries passengers from Delhi to Chandigarh apart from the Himalayan queen.

Tourists willing to travel by air could arrive from Delhi or Amritsar.

A quick visit to the rose garden introduces people to different types of flowers spread across 27 acres on the ground. It was created in 1967 and is frequented by tourists from all around the world over.

People who love history could visit the city museum which incorporates the different facets of architectural development. Original sketches and plans are kept inside the building. They attract the imagination of the tourist who can revisit the past through the evidences. Apart from the aforesaid places, many sports venues are created in the city. There is a special track for the bicycle safari so that people interested in adventure could enjoy the moment.
