Mr. Arvind Kejriwal - New Delhi Chief Minister

Mr. Arvind Kejriwal is the current Chief Minister of the New Delhi and is serving his second term as CM. He was elected as the Chief Minister in December 2013 as well but resigned after a period of 49 days as he had won with minority and the other parties were not cooperative enough. Mr. Kejriwal contested the Delhi elections again in January 2015 where his party enjoyed an historic win where they have won 67 assembly seats out of 70. Mr. Kejriwal himself defeated Nupur Sharma of BJP by more than 30,000 votes.

Personal History

Arvind Kejriwal was born on 16 August 1968 to a middle class family from Haryana. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kharagpur and thereafter he joined Tata Steel, Jamshedpur in 1989. He resigned in 1992 to study for Civil services examination and qualified it in 1995. He married his batch mate, Sunita, the same year.

After qualifying the Civil Services Examination, Mr. Kejriwal joined the Indian Revenue Service as an Assistant Engineer in the Income Tax Department, and was later promoted to be a Joint Commissioner. He was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2006 for starting an anti-corruption movement during his employment. He resigned from the services in 2006 and donated the award money to start an NGO, The Public Cause Research Foundation. The Chief Minister was associated with various other social causes as well and started an anti-corruption movement and also joined other activist fighting against corruption in Delhi.

Mr. Arvind Kejriwal introduced Aam Admi Party (AAP) in the year 2012 and it is this party that won the Delhi Assembly Election in 2013 and in 2015 again. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi on 14 February 2015 at the famous Ramlila grounds in Old Delhi.
