Heavy Rains bring Delhi Traffic to a Standstill

July 09, 2015 | V. Velayudam

Southern and eastern parts of Delhi were affected severely due to heavy rains that lashed the city on the night of July 8th this year. Most of the important roads were submerged in knee-deep water and almost all the roads witnessed a long line of vehicles that were stranded in the heavy traffic commotion. Areas like Ring Road, IIT Flyover, South Extension, Sardar Patel Marg etc. came to a standstill because of massive traffic jams.

To compound to the already existing misery, traffic signals in Dwarka stopped working as rain water had entered into them. Without these signals, confused vehicles and commuters were left clueless on the roads. Many other areas like Bandhu Gupta Road, Anand Parbat –Karol Bagh stretch, Mayur Vihar, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate and many others too witnessed heavy traffic snarls. People travelling to their offices and airports were indefinitely delayed as many parts of Delhi witnessed severe water-logging problems. Many vehicles reported break down issues as rain water had entered into them. Traffic officials have issued advisories to commuters travelling in peak areas and have cautioned them against these serious traffic snarls. The police department has authorised additional workforce to set right these rain related traffic problems in Delhi to enable a smooth commute for citizens.
