May 12, 2015 | P. Prabhu

The DTC created history of sorts by inducting Ms. Vankadarath Saritha in its staff of drivers. Saritha, the first women driver in DTC, is a native of Nalgonda district in Telangana State. New Delhi has been witnessing women who choose driving as a career option through auto rickshaws and cabs. DTC has received applauses from various corners of the society for its initiative of having a women driver in DTC to drive the public transport bus.

Saritha will be posted at the Sarojini Nagar depot and will be given day shifts along the Central Delhi route. Saritha was employed as a private chauffeur in South Delhi before she responded to an advertisement from DTC in leading local newspapers calling for applications from eligible woman candidates for the post of DTC drivers.

However, as with all DTC drivers, Saritha had to undergo medical fitness examination and a four-week job training at DTC training school. Saritha was inducted only after she obtained the mandatory public service vehicle badge issued by the transport department.
