Delhi Government Announces Tourism Drive to Upgrade 15 City Hubs to Global Standards

Sep 19, 2015 | S. Poddar

It is wake- up call for the Ministry of Tourism and the Delhi Government as the Capital is experiencing a decline in the number of tourists visiting the city. Delhi’s rank has slipped from third to fourth position for foreign tourists arrivals.

Also the number of entry tickets for foreigners to historical monuments such as Qutub Minar or Lal Qila sold by the Archaeological Society of India has declined by almost 30 percent which is quite alarming.

To improve the image of the Capital and make it more “tourist friendly”, the Delhi Government has declared 15 areas in the city that will have “night-life” and other facilities developed as per international standards.  The 15 places marked for this development already attract a large number of foreign tourists. Now these places will not only attract more tourists but will also have places and facilities that tourists will enjoy.

Some of these 15 high street tourist destinations include Connaught Place, Hauz Khas Village, Khan Market, Karol Bagh etc.

Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra is keen to make Delhi a top tourist hub by creating spaces that provide entertainment, relaxation and cultural activities. Plans are being finalized for the 15 tourist hubs to be given a complete face-lift and they will have top class restaurants with Indian and global cuisine, shopping, cultural activities and help desks for tourists. Tourists would be able to experience an interesting Delhi Nightlife as also the culture of Delhi.

Mr. Mishra would like the tourists visiting Delhi to have similar or better facilities, comfort and setting as they have experienced in top tourists destinations across the world. This would surely attract more number of tourists as word of mouth will spread.

The importance of safety in all these 15 hubs cannot be over emphasized. All these hubs and the rest of the city have to be made safe for tourists so that there are no safety issues that will stop tourists from coming to Delhi. Safety measures are being worked out with Delhi Police to make the areas completely safe for everyone.

Do you think Delhi is the most developing Capital in the world?
