Forts & Monuments

There are a number of Forts spread over various parts of Delhi, which are of monumental value, because they are constructed by the Mughal emperors during their regime. Many of these forts reflect the excellence of Mughal architecture, some of them making the visitors awestruck with their huge and unimaginable style of construction.

Besides Forts, there are amazing Tombs which make another set of monuments. Some of them are of such a great height along with a number of mosques which are availed of for prayers even today and the wonderful designs of British Architect Lutyens who created the modern city of Delhi.

There are great monuments and strong citadels such as Red Fort, Jantar Mantar, Old Fort, Qutub Minar and other Tombs of royal persons, which account for some of the most wonderful monuments of ancient times as well as present capital city of India.

Delhi’s history dates back to thousands years, drawing reference of Indraprastha, which was the famous city during Mahabharat period. It has its heritage as rich as its picturesque landscape, it was the capital of several empires, while the prominent among these dynasties being the Mughal kingdom. The Mughal emperors had raised large number of forts and monuments in Delhi, although over the centuries, some of the forts, tombs and mosques of Delhi have been destroyed, abandoned, captured or modified for different uses. However, those ramparts left behind tell us the rich history of this great city. Even today, Delhi's astounding history is witnessed in the forts and monuments lying across the city.

The good news about these monuments and forts is that the later additions made to these forts and other structures did not disturb their original flavour of antiquity. These monuments do stand as a rich architectural legacy that enabled the construction of this city in the Hindu-Rajput style in earlier times, later the Mughal architecture and in recent times with the British style of architecture.
