Classification of NGOs

The various criteria’s of differentiating the NGOs can be declared on the basis of its directions and stages of cooperation. There are different norms that declare the functioning of an NGO.

The further sub-categories of NGOs belonging to orientation groups can be declared as charitable orientation, service placement, participatory coordination and empowering orientation.

The other type of NGO level based on co-operation level can be categorized as community-based, city wise, national NGOs and international groups.

These Non-governmental organizations have been formed with varied groups and have many various groups who work on different spheres associated with them. The other names given to NGOs are private voluntary groups, civil organizations, independent societies, self-help groups, grassroots sections, volunteer groups, transitional social movement societies and non-state actors.

  • BINGO - is the abbreviation of business-friendly international NGO
  • CITS - The kind of NGO that functions on the basis of rendering helping hand to scientific groups by rousing the new talent by involving them in Research and development activities.
  • CSO - the abbreviated form for Civil Society Organization.
  • DONGO - stands for Donor Organized NGO
  • ENGO - can be expanded as Environmental NGO like Global 2000
  • GONGO - is named as Government Operated NGOs.
  • INGO -  is the short form for International NGO such as Oxfam
  • QUANGO - is stated as quasi-autonomous NGO such as ISO non-governmental organization, International Organization for Standardization.
  • TANGO - is for the technical assistance NGO
  • GSO - can be called as Grassroots Support Organization
  • MANGO - is called as market advocacy NGO
  • CHARDS - is the abbreviated form for Community Health and Rural Development Society.

As per the World Bank Typology, the NGOs can be classified into Operational and Advocacy NGOs.

  • Operational NGO - The main aim behind the functioning of Operational NGO can be defined as the design and implementation of development related ventures. The functional activities of operational NGOs have been rendered to national, international and community based NGO activities.
  • Advocacy NGO - The motive of setting up of Advocacy NGO is to endorse specific issues. The workings of the Advocacy NGOs is based on making the society aware and impart knowledge by getting involved in the related activities like politicization, articles, magazines and events and happenings.
