Ring Roads

There are two ring roads in Delhi – Main Ring Road and the Outer Ring Road. These are the two famous ring roads. The total length of these two is about 87km. The other ring roads that are no so famous are the Rural Ring Road and the West Delhi Ring Road. As the name indicates, the former caters to the road needs of the rural population living in North West Delhi, while the latter caters to the road needs of the West Delhi people.

The main or Inner Ring Road that runs for about 55km currently has around 3 lanes which are direction specific. There are plans to include one more lane in this as well. The movement of vehicles on these roads is quite smooth, except at places of pedestrian crossings. One of the important routes here that goes from AIIMS to Naraina is being worked on to make it a signal-free zone. From here, there are quite a few flyovers that lead to Outer Ring Road, which has many lanes pointing to different directions.

Since these are busy roads, there are many flyovers running between them. Especially, the one at New Delhi is prone to movement of many vehicles. Inaugurated by the then CM of Delhi, Ms. Sheila Dixit, these ring roads are subjected to automated, robotic sweeping mechanisms.
