Diwali Festival - Celebrations and Greetings in Delhi

The festival of lights - Diwali is generally celebrated in the month of either October or November as the date changes each year. This year Diwali was celebrated on 23rd October. The festival is celebrated at almost every part of the country. The Hindu community celebrates this festival with all pomp and show.

The city of Delhi celebrates this festival beginning from the day of Dussherra. People in Delhi start Diwali preparation by cleaning their houses, getting their house painted, decorations and shopping. The hopping streets and marketing places in the city are lighted up and decorated. All the shops in Delhi put up sale and various promotional offers. The market places and houses are swathed with flowers. Lights, Rangoli made with different colors and various fests are organized in different parts of the city. People generally shop for new clothes at this occasion. On Dhanteras, a day before Diwali, people purchase any new kitchen utensil.

On the day of Diwali, the markets remain closed after afternoon. The process of exchanging gifts and sweets in the friends and families start many days before the festival of Diwali. The most common gift given as the Diwali gifts are sweets, dry fruits or silver coins.

The markets in Delhi are generally seen overcrowded days before Diwali since people move out of their houses for shopping and purchasing gifts.

The houses in every part of the city are beautifully decorated and on the eve of Diwali festival, Lakshmi puja is organized. The Diwali puja is done by performing aarti by the females of the house for the males by garlanding him and placing tikka on their forehead and thus praying for their long lives. The other ritual performed is by plunging silver coin in the milk tumbler and then the milk is speckled in all parts of the house for prosperity. The Prashad is offered to the God throughout the night by placing it in front of the idol of God.

The city of Delhi celebrates the festival of Diwali over a period of five days as listed below:-

  1. Day 1 is celebrated as Dhanteras
  2. Day 2 marks the day of Choti Diwali or Roop Chaturdashi
  3. Day 3 is the main day of Laxmi Puja or Bandi Chor Diwas
  4. Day 4 is celebrated as Goverdhan Puja or Annakoot
  5. Day 5 is considered as last day of celebration named as Bhai Dooj
