The safety of women is a major concern in National Capital Region (NCR). In order to resolve this issue, the New Delhi Government has come up with a plan to install CCTV cameras and also to give Wi-Fi facility in Delhi Transport Corporation buses in the month of December, this year. Gopal Rai, the transport minister of Delhi said that they will execute the first phase of this project in selected number of non-AC low fare and AC DTC buses. The presence of CCTV cameras in DTC buses will help to bring down the issues faced by women while travelling.

Noble Initiative for Women’s Safety

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi chair the Delhi Dialogue Commission (DDC) took the charge of implementing the flagship project of the government in National Capital Region. At the time of Assembly elections, Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party promised their people with CCTV (Closed Circuit Televisions) cameras in all Delhi buses in order to enhance the safety of women in National Capital Region. The facility of Wi-Fi in DTC buses will help commuters to spend their travelling time in surfing net or check their mails.

This Wi-Fi in DTC buses is provided at free of cost for time being and after that, they will be charged as per their internet usage in the bus. They have planned to initiate both Wi-Fi and CCTV at a time in the bus so that there won’t be any change in the system in future. The initial phase has already started with 200 CCTV cameras in DTC buses along with home guards to enhance the safety of women travelers.

The Delhi Transport Corporation stated that they have installed 3 CCTV cameras in 200 of their buses belonging to Sarojini Nagar and Rajghat depots. These cameras hold the capacity to record events for about seven hours continuously.
